Monthly transport costs: calculate car, public transport and bike

Transport combines fixed and variable expenses. A travel pass is predictable, while fuel and maintenance fluctuate. Converting everything to a monthly figure reveals what each way of travelling really costs.

Transport is one of the fixed monthly expenses that come back every month.

What does Transport cover?

Include lease, finance or depreciation, insurance, vehicle tax, parking, fuel or charging, servicing, tyres and repairs. Add public transport, shared mobility, taxis, bicycle depreciation, maintenance and storage. Some are fixed expenses; others move with your kilometres.

Average monthly cost

Formula: (annual fixed costs + depreciation + maintenance + variable journeys) / 12 = monthly transport cost.

If all transport spending is €5,040 a year, it averages €420 per month. For a fair comparison also calculate cost per kilometre and travel time. Car depreciation is a real cost even though it is not a bank transaction that month.

How to save on Transport

  • Combine journeys and work from home where practical and agreed.
  • Compare ownership with car sharing, rental or public transport at low mileage.
  • Remove unused zones, days or options from travel passes.
  • Maintain tyre pressure and service schedules.
  • Plan parking and consider park-and-ride or cycling the final section.

Reliability, accessibility and time determine whether a cheaper alternative is sustainable.

Comparing and switching

For regular routes compare monthly cost, one-off purchase, journey time, flexibility and maintenance risk. A cheap pass is expensive when rarely used.

For a car, include the cover in your insurance overview. Update the budget as soon as commuting or vehicle use changes.
