Monthly mobile phone costs: calculate and save

A mobile bill can combine a service plan, handset instalment and incidental charges. Separating them shows what your mobile phone really costs per month and whether SIM-only is better value.

Mobile is one of the fixed monthly expenses that come back every month.

What does Mobile cover?

Include calls, texts and data, handset repayment or depreciation, insurance, out-of-bundle use, roaming, service numbers and paid services charged through the bill. If you bought the phone outright, divide its price by the number of months you expect to use it.

Average monthly cost

Formula: plan + handset cost + average extras = monthly mobile cost.

A €18 SIM-only plan, a handset costing €21 per month over 36 months and €3 of average extras total €42 per month. Once the handset is paid off, reduce the budget accordingly. Check three to six bills and compare data use with the Wi-Fi available through your home internet.

How to save on Mobile

  • Move to SIM-only or lower the plan after paying off the phone.
  • Base the data allowance on real use and enable limit alerts.
  • Keep the handset longer and replace only the battery when sensible.
  • Check whether insurance still suits the phone’s current value.
  • Remove paid services billed through the mobile account.

Review mobile alongside your other subscriptions once a year.

Comparing and switching

Compare full contract cost, coverage where you spend time, speed, data, roaming and the price after the minimum term. For a handset contract, compare the standalone device price and finance terms too.

Check the end date before requesting number transfer, then update your fixed monthly expenses, including any instalment that continues.
