Monthly municipal taxes in the Netherlands: calculation guide

Dutch municipal taxes often arrive as one large annual assessment, so they are easily missed in a monthly budget. Dividing all local charges by twelve tells you how much to reserve each month.

Municipal taxes is one of the fixed monthly expenses that come back every month.

What does Municipal taxes cover?

Depending on your municipality, household and home, the assessment may include waste charges, sewer charges, property tax for owners, and local parking or dog tax. Water-board charges usually come on a separate assessment.

Although water-board tax is not technically municipal tax, it belongs with local housing costs in your budget. Keep the drinking-water bill under water costs.

Average monthly cost

Rates and household rules differ by municipality and water board, so your latest assessments are more useful than a national average.

Formula: total annual municipal and water-board assessments / 12 = monthly reserve.

If all assessments total €1,440, reserve €120 per month. When paying by instalments, check their timing; a short collection period can make the direct debit look higher than the true twelve-month average.

How to save on Municipal taxes

You cannot negotiate the rates, but you can check that the address, ownership, household size and property valuation data are correct. Challenge demonstrably incorrect information within the deadline stated on the assessment.

Ask the municipality or water board about remission or a payment plan if relevant. Eligibility depends on current income, assets and local policy, so always check the official conditions for your area.

Comparing and switching

You cannot switch municipality without moving, but you can compare each new assessment with the previous year. Separate rate increases from changes in your own circumstances.
